The short term health effects are negligible at best. But there are some long term risks you should be aware of.
-Smoking it will have some of the same problems as tobacco, such as tar and carcinogens and whatnot. This is true of just about any burning plant you smoke. The studies done on this find it hard to compare to tobacco, as tobacco smokers usually smoke more, but marijuana smokers typically hold the smoke in their lungs longer and don't use filters. Easiest way I see to get around this is to eat it. I am not a pot smoker, however I imagine that some methods of smoking are probably better than others (i.e. a joint or pipe would be the worse, whereas a bong might help remove some of the contaminants. This is based on speculation though, not any study i;ve seen)
-There have been studies linking long term habitual pot smokers to increased risk of some mental disorders such as schizophrenia, however there is also evidence to suggest that pot may protect against other kinds of neurological damage. There is still a lot of debate about this right now. IMHO I'd say that people who smoke frequently (multiple times daily) are probably at the most risk, and people who do pot casually are probably at minimal or no risk. As with everything, moderation is key.
-Some people can get addicted. I don't personally know if this is a physical addiction or not, so I'm not going to speculate. But never underestimate a mental addiction. If you don't have an addictive personality, once again I'd say moderation is key. Don't let it become a crutch.
-While it's possible to overdose on THC (the active ingredient in pot) you would need to smoke an inhuman amount of the stuff to get to that point. I mean, it's possible, but I'd be impressed if you actually managed to pull it off. I'm talking a LOT here.
-There's no real evidence to support the 'gateway drug' hypothesis. Most pot smokers do not feel the need to switch to a harder drug.
As with any other substance that has an effect on your body, there are risks associated with it. In my personal opinion, the risks are below that of even alcohol, but you should still be aware of them before doing anything.
I will say this though, in all my years I've had many a drunk take a swing at me, and seen many a drunk go too far and get alcohol poisoning. I've never seen a stoner get aggressive or OD. I'm sure most anyone who has to deal with these two groups will share my sentiments.
Edit: there are some short term effects (like slowed reaction time or a bit worse memory) but in the few times I've tried it, I've found it typically wears off within a day. Most people I have spoken to state that it wears off much faster for them, so YMMV. (This is after the 'high' wears off, FYI. Of course you're not going to be 100% while high.)

Is it just me or did the sever do something strange...
I died and re-spawned in a very unfamiliar place, I have no idea how to get back...
Same thing happened to me actually, i haven't the slightest idea what in the fuck.
