Hoping I won't be out at sea when this goes down, I will be there.
If this whole mess turns out to be an ice-cap flooding scenario, I'll commandeer the frigate and haul your asses on board!

Thats a good palce is it even available for the date?

Hasn't been taken yet, reservations will be available for that date on December 21st of this year. They open it up 1 year in advance. (edit: ranger said 6 months(edit: 1 year seems to be the time, not 2))

That's a really great find and close to the Vancouver Rant Crew. I'll put it down as an option.

Here is a facility that holds 60 people, 15 vehicles, and is incredibly cheap to rent:

Good hiking and other opportunities are also in the area.

Best of all... it has a 20 seat outhouse!

That is quite a steal to have a roof over your head. If Washington is anything like Michigan in December, then a roof would be best. Any WA wogs from around the area know what the snow depth is?

Hopefully by 2012 I'll know if I can go or not. If I do, I'm definitely renting a sled as there are trails EVERYWHERE!

Just to add one comment, this is between Highway 12 and Interstate 90 from Seattle. It looks like a real easy to get there from either Portland or Seattle to Highway 97 that runs between the two. (Highway 97 is the local highway that basically runs the rainshadow of the east side of the cascades. You can find a lot of wineries , state and national forests and many other wonderful trips alone this route!)

I can check up on the area in the coming months and see how it looks. So far I really like the idea of that big of a unit.

@naypalm-maker

To answer your question, depends on what coast or mountain range? Washington has three or four of them. Cascade Range where the Portland, Seattle and Vancouver BC are in, Rockies North and East, Wallows and Blue Mountains to SouthEast, then the Olympic mountains to the Olympic Peninsula.

So to ask that question, you would need to have a fine pointer to where you are looking.

Now to the further north of Washington state, is the Canadian Rockies ( British Columbia anyone?) and many, many mountain Ranges. So to give you an us an exact peered in GPS location, gaggle the Farmers Almanac, Read Sean's lovely decoder-ring-of-fun, optimize Cimm's video editing to superb levels and finally pray to the Canadian snow berg god for nearly 2 years before you'll finally know even an nth degree of how much snow their might be. (Honest comment: It changes EVERY year in the backcountry, so no year is ever alike! Even the summer rainy season is never the same here.)

I will plan on renting the facility for one night and check it out and the surrounding area. Any specifics I should report back with?

I am thinking: Possible internet connection nearby, cellphone signal (hopefully with multiple carriers), cool things nearby, Water source, hopefully map out the surrounding area also. Also figure out quality of roads etc.

Any other ideas? Anyone want to join in? I wouldn't mind the company, also splitting the rental cost would be a plus as well.

Those all sound good. If you could get exact GPS coordinates of the location it would be great. Lots of photos of the facility and room for parking would be good.

Communications:
Wifi: No
Cellular: No
FRS/GMRS: Tons of hunters in the area using them but clear channels are still abundant.
Good view of the sky for satellite.

Location:
http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&safe=off&q=naches,+wa&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Naches,+Yakima,+Washington&ll=46.973057,-121.172719&spn=0.006332,0.016512&t=h&z=17
Lots of open space for people who want to camp outside (if any) No usable water in the immediate vicinity but down the road is a substantial river if needed. Recommend bringing lots of water.

Road access:
On highway until about 1 mile from cabin. Dirt road for last mile- passable by passenger car. Has some slope so trailers might have issues and chains are required if snow is on ground. Access restricted during winter- must go across pass on I-90, then down to 410 if 410 is closed near Mt. Rainier. This detour adds about 30min of driving but it is on very well used roads.

Nearby Activities:
Mountain biking, hiking, rafting, fishing, there is a good hill to ski on if there is snow. ATVing is restricted in the area but areas down HWY 410 are open for quads etc.

Recommended items:

Plastic to seal unused doors and windows for heat, Good sleeping bag (not kidding on this one), high efficiency lighting (the building is quite dark) Satellite internet would be good also. Fuel for the fireplace, extra gasoline, extra food. (the closest fuel is about 30 min away and costs $.30-$.50 more per gallon) Found E on HWY 410 at N46° 56.429 W 121° 03.745 The closest grocery store is E on HWY 410 at N46° 54.843 W121° 02.219 Both would be a good drive to get to and would be expensive as well. More recommendations are sure to come.

Here are some more pictures of the area if the video isn't enough for you: http://s238.photobucket.com/albums/ff79/Mongo400/RANT

Then the video on the way back going the route that will be taken if 410 gets closed: http://www.youtube.com/v/v8V84dKL2Vs&rel=1

Further details from the email I got after reserving the night:

There is no potable water at this site. Visitors must bring plenty of water for drinking, cooking and washing. Water can be obtained from pitcher pumps at neighboring campgrounds during the summer season only.

Please bring your own garbage bags. This is a "Pack it in, Pack it out" site. Trash may be disposed of at neighboring campgrounds during the summer. Visitors must clean the cabin prior to departure.

Please bring sleeping bags/bedding, as well as flashlights or lanterns (there is no lighting in the cabin), first aid kit, washcloths and towels, dish soap and other cleaning supplies.

All Forest Service Cabin Rentals are No Smoking facilities. No charcoal stoves, candles, or other open flame devices are allowed in the cabin.

Directions:
From Naches, Washington follow US Highway 12 west for approximately 4 miles to State Route 410. Take Highway 410 for about 36 miles to Bumping Road 1800. Turn onto Bumping Road and travel less than half a mile to Forest Service Road (FSR) 1800-381 on your right. Take FSR 381 for several tenths of a mile to the gate, and then proceed through the gate for another mile to the lodge.

And remember children if you hear a giant roar that shakes the window glass then fuck off immediately.

100 points for anyone that gets that reference.
