Well I have been serious considering not going to the January party up in Vancouver BC because of this article.

The area to the south of Vancouver BC along the US border is continuously in the news for some mishap or screwed up thing that got through.  But to have this happen where they can "examine, hold or erase" someone's data on electronic devices of their choosing.

Honestly, Canada is a wonderful country and have lived along its US border for many moons.  But since 2001, its been a bunch of crap that one administration feels it needs to monitor its citizens and foreigners....

Please take a look at the link and tell me how you feel.  I really want to go but if this is how I'm going to be treated as a US citizen coming back into the US?

Possible options to creating a harder border hardware (computer only..)

The idea I liked the best, is to encrypt the data as much as you can, uploaded it to a secure web site or location and ditch the thing on some fool for free.  Hey even craigslist it for some cheap cash...

Buy a EEE for cheap when you get here. Use GMail for your mail. Done.

I hate flying because of this (among other things), but have crossed from the US->Canada->London->Paris several times this year without any problems with the TSA. Being a white kid wearing business jackass camo might have something to do with it.

@Enki: Wonderful idea.  Buy a cheap laptop with a 4 gig card that if you would get stopped at the border, there would not be much left on them. (aka erase incriminating evidence way before you get on the plane, cross the border or do other things.

Your businessware and race might have been a way you got around the TSA.

Enki and Cimm, Am I just wayyyy to paranoid crossing the border and back North of Seattle?

My current border plan: dump all my files to my VPN network drives, wipe the laptop i'm taking clean and do a re-image, nothing but a few apps, cross the border with absolubtly no information on me at all, as soon as I get a net connection jump on the vpn and use my files from there.

If i'm really paranoid, wipe it again on the way back. I probably won't be able to do a reinstall but i'll just tell em my computer crashed while i was out and about, reimage it after i get home.

This is fast for me since I don't install windows/linux/whatever, i keep a full image of the hard drive (like they do at large corporations) and just re-image whenever i need to do a reinstall. Way faster and easier.

I'm not planning on taking any electronics which could store data, other than my digital camera.
I may bring my phone, idk. would probably get one of those cheap trac phones or something for 20$.

I'm also debating on bringing my 2m Handheld. Could be interesting.

Set up laptop with Linux install, leaving space on HD for a Windows Install (in my case, 250GB drive...eh, 20GB for Windows.  They're not gonna check partition size)

Install Linux
Install Windows (it'll overwrite the bootloader, removing Linux as an option to direct-boot)
'Use' the system for a day or 3. (so its not 'fresh', maybe a few games or something)
If they ask me to fire it up, up comes windows, which is used.

Across the border, I boot up a Live CD and restore GRUB, or just boot off a USB stick to find the now 'hidden' OS.

The grub installer and how to set it up with the UUID's has always mystified and scare me. I' ve many partitions and other things because of it.

Have to study it more to find out more information. The Wipe, vpn and imaging idea really has me thinking. :-)

My favorite links partitioner is Partimage. Its very CLI friendly, though its for the faintest of heart.

Well...all the above, or leave a box at home that you can remote into for access to data.  (put games, apps etc on 'fresh install' but nothing 'risky')

Better yet, why not rent some ftp or web space on a server that you can put a fresh image or ? on. (Make it small, just the essentials like it was stated above..)

Using Linux with wget-DD to write the image to the HD?

Just makes sure there is nothing questionable or illegal. Yeah, some hosts might get a little mad. Or like some had said on this thread, put up your own home box with hopto or some other networking connection.

My only problem with those connections,  is cable and dsl tend to have very slow 1 Meg or less connections uploading.  Do you want to be downloading a huge image or archive from one of these connections.
