Found this interesting newsitem on bluelight.ru. It's about how seeking out and finding new information online gives us a hit of "the brains pleasure-enhancing neurotransmitters called opioids". Making us junkies for new information. Kind of a long read but well worth the effort.

I would like to think that there are some people who enjoy a sense of learning and achievement. IE you get more information, you know more than the next guy and you can lord it over them when you get together for post work drinks. The achievement part comes in when you get more online status. Either your hit rate is higher, your posts are more, your manna is higher or you just get to darn well say your piece. In any event you get a sense of improvement which is almost like cleaning out your workshop or garage. Only its less messy and much less exhausting.

Also computers have the "pretty colours and pictures" thing going for them. Now I know that we are hardwired to focus on those. So on another level we're hooked.

Think of all the game consoles that have come out since the 1980s?  Think how windows 98, XP and Vista look like?  Even the MacOS from PPC days up until now? Cell Phones, Japanese trinket/pets, text messaging? Ipod?

All of them are basically just shiny toys?

If you factor all of this uselessness in, its all just junk to satisfy and junkify out lives.  Look I do see some purposes in some things.  But what happened year after year of the same crap coming over and over again?  Can one think this might be being done to pacify the citizenry?
