Pistols can have 10 rounds. It's semi-auto rifles that are 5 rounds. non semi autos, such as my levergun, have no limit. My lever holds 15 legally.

I'll have to remember this in case the US decides to implement similar laws.

But we appreciate the thought.  I already have a source for receivers locally for 169.00 (DPMS), so that's what we'll be building on from here on in until they're out.
Not too long ago I picked up a DPMS (LMT) for $135 ($150 after tax) to register with the atf (add $200). I wonder why they're more expensive in FL?  okokok So I actually paid $350 out the door.

I have only used DPMS lower build kits to assemble lowers. ...anyone have any suggestions for/against good lower parts kits? I'm looking for 2x more kits.

DPMS kit is Currently going for $56.99 at Midway http://www.midwayusa.com/eproductpage.exe/showproduct?saleitemid=877204&t=11082005

edit:
Gosh darn it... I also need one of these.

http://www.midwayusa.com/eproductpage.exe/showproduct?saleitemid=661678&t=11082005
$196.95 and Out of stock.  GRRR

SO i've finished modifying one of the uzi mags. My god I'm not buying any more of these, alot of grinding, 3 chunks removed, and a minor adjustment to the follower, and I got it to reliably feed. Not worth my time to save on shipping.

OH NO Poor UZI Mags!  What if you end up getting an UZI?  They are only selling for $6000.

How do you have to mod the mag anyhow?  I'm new on this whole 9mm carbine concept.
I understand that there are 2 different 9mm magazine types for ARs.
There is the Bushmaster/Colt and there are the Olympic mags.   ... I don't think uzi fits either w/o modification.

no uzi does not fit either without modification.. that's why I modified it lol

I'll take a pic of the unmodified one I still have, the modified one, and the bushmaster. The only issue is that it won't lock the slide when empty, but I can live with that.

edit: Pics

First pic, the first mag is the unmodified one, the second is (obviously) the modified one, and the third is the bushy mag.
http://rostudios.ath.cx/img/magazine/1.JPG

Second pic, the blotches and scratches on the back of the modified one is because I spilt fast drying glue all over the back. I had to dry it out and sand it off. One of these days i'll sand it down completely and repaint the mag, but for now it's good. Note the spine  on the back of the bushy mag, that's the reason why it locks the slide back when the uzi ones don'y
http://rostudios.ath.cx/img/magazine/2.JPG

Third pic, I had to glue a piece of metal to the follower to make it feed reliably. the cartridges sit a little more slanted in a stock uzi mag than in the bushy, so if you jarred the mag even a little it would fail to feed. I got 3 scratched to hell cartridges i'm going to throw out, they are so scratched from failing to feed while I tested that I feel they are unsafe.
http://rostudios.ath.cx/img/magazine/3.JPG

And no, I have no intention of buying an UZI, I think those things are so damn UGLY Tongue

Another note I find interesting: How in some countries the barrel is 'the weapon' and in others it is the slide, and in the US it is the frame/reciever (at least on handguns).

In the United States, the legal "firearm" by definition is the receiver, where the action is housed and attached to the barrel.

In most of Europe, the Firearm means any part that can be identified with the gun, which includes the barrel, slide, frame, etc.  I don't know the full nature of the law, but most firearms from europe have the serial number in at least these places, if not more.

In some ways, it makes sense, since the barrel is what puts the "ballistics signature" on the projectile, the slide (and thus the firing pin) are what put the "ballistic signature" on the shell casing...etc.

Different legal systems have different legal definitions.

That's why.

Where were you for the 1994-2004 Assault Weapons Ban?? They already did that.  Ironically, most folks didn't even realize they'd been fucked until they went to go buy a gun;  By and large they all said, "Well, that's STUPID," but other than that, they did nothing.  It was only because we had a Congress that was willing to again do nothing to reinstate the AWB that it sunset.

And now the silly liberals in the House and Senate, now that they have a voting majority again, are again, for the fourth year in a row, trying to push the same legislative butt-nuggets into law once again, this time without a sunset clause.

So, stay tuned, my friend...they're not deciding...they've actually DECIDED already and are looking for a chink in the armor.

They're not more expensive in FL.  Well, they're more expensive than they used to be.  Charlie has the DPMS units for 169.99 right now...supply and demand.

And the 200 dollar registration fee is NOT for a Title I firearm, it's for a Title II;  I can only assume that because it's an AR-15 receiver, that you are building an SBR.  Not everyone will need to pay that Title II tax.  I don't, because I don't build Title II weapons.  I build plain old rifles.

Stick to what works;  DPMS (Defense Procurement Manufacturing Service) receivers and kits are decent enough;  I've got a couple spares and they're of this brand.

The trick lately is actually getting your hands on them, not getting them backordered.

No I wasn't for it, but I wasn't really anything.. Because I couldn't vote and I was ignorant about firearms at the time. I know they are looking at passing it again with more crap added on. Not good.

Roger that. The DPMS is intended for a 7.5" SBR in 5.56mm

Any suggestions on where to get stuff?  My usual places are fairly screwed when it comes to back ordering. Hence the jacked up prices.

Now that I recall, I built a lower from a RRA (Rock River Armory) lower parts kit, and the kit was pretty bad. Some stuff was slightly rusted, other things needed to be blued.  Bleh!

EDIT:
DPMS is OOS from their homepage on lower kits
BUSHMASTER has them in stock. Smiley Looks like I'm going bushy!

EDIT^2:
I found some inexpensive AR-15 Receivers & build kits here:
http://www.aimsurplus.com/acatalog/Receivers.html

They even have a crappy (inaccurate) Romanian Druganov Clone here:

For AR-15 Parts:

1) Del-Ton
2) M&A parts
3) Model 1 Sales

Cautionary note:  Both M&A parts and Model 1 Sales have good AND bad reviews.  If you purchase SINGLE parts from them, it should be okay.  But I've gotten both good parts and stinkers from them (including an out of spec bolt stop that caused me to ruin a receiver a few years ago -- I don't remember who I got it from) -- so CHECK YOUR PARTS against OTHERS and verify they're in spec.  The way I could have prevented ruining my receiver is to take the correct roll pin and slide it through the hole of the bolt stop instead of just trying to install it directly.  (The hole was too small) -- I could have corrected this right here at home and been just as happy.  Instead, I kept trying to force a STEEL roll pin through a STEEL hole that was too small, with ALUMINUM ears on either side...guess what failed first?

And of course, the ALUMINUM was the RECEIVER.

Murphy's Law:  A 300 dollar picture tube will protect a 10 cent fuse by blowing first.

Ol Murph is alive and well in the AR-15 parts business.

Moving right along:

4) J&T Distributing -- they're listed fourth because of availability reasons, not quality reasons.  They'd be number ONE for quality in my book -- it's just that their availability, because they also sell full kits, sometimes isn't what we'd want it to be, and their prices are a bit higher.

5) DPMS -- had good luck with their kits when sold at gun shows on blister packs -- but that's pretty much the only place I can find 'em.  I've tried to order from the website with little success...but these are what I see most often when actually AT the gun shows, which is why I have them.

Aside:  THAT's why I go to gun shows -- because many times, the availability of EVERYTHING is right there, right now.  Just bring money and be early or they will sell out.

Aside: Scott's Rules of Gun Shows:

1) If you're there for availability, be early and BRING MONEY.
2) If you're there just to kick the tires, it doesn't matter when you get there.
3) If you're there for the deals, arrive late in the afternoon -- the best deals are an hour before closing EACH DAY.  First day, selection is better, second day, deals are better.
4) Gun Shows are like Wal-Mart -- if you see something you like, you'd better buy it RIGHT THEN, because it WON'T BE THERE the next time you come around.
5) KNOW WHAT YOU ARE BUYING -- every crank and their uncle sell cheap swapmeet knockoffs of The Real Deal at shows -- if a cheap knockoff will work FOR WHAT YOU WANT IT TO, then by all means, go for it.  But understand that premium prices don't always mean premium quality.  Your sole weapon against getting ripped off is knowledge.
6) The vendors you know personally will probably give you better deals -- schmoozing at gun shows is technically appropriate IN MODERATION.
7) Always ask permission before touching another man's gun.  Period.  Even if they're out for sale.  Learned that one the hard way at 15 in California when a gentleman selling a pristine Colt became upset when I chamber checked it.  Oops.
8) "forbidden" literature can sometimes be had at gun shows -- in ALL flavors.  Try not to be offended while shopping for it.
9) DON'T talk too much about your political views at gun shows, even if you're agreeing with someone else.  Think about who else might be there listening, and why.
10) Make sure that when you go, you factor in the cost of parking and the cost of admission to anything you are planning to purchase -- if you're there for a 3.00 part, but you paid 5.00 for parking and another 10.00 for admission, that part better be DAMN WELL WORTH IT (and it could very well be -- lack of availability, or other mitigating factors DO apply -- just apply them in your head before you spend your money)

The next gunshow around here in Tampa is in the beginning of December.  I will be going.  If those folks are still backordered by then, I'll be taking one hundred dollars ($100.00 USD) to the gun show for the specific purpose of getting small, hard-to-find stuff for us here and shipping it out.  I can't ship anything illegal of course (no hi-cap magazines, no firearms receivers or templates or other stuff like that) but single parts (where legal), scopes, holsters, accessories...you name it...if you think I might be able to find it at the Gun Show coming up, and you NEED it, shoot me a PM.  No guarantees, of course, but I CAN and WILL be your eyes (and wallet) on the ground here in Tampa if at all possible.

Back on previous topic:

6) Fulton Armory -- Expensive, but almost always in stock.  Decent quality.

Generally, you should refer to Scott's Gun Show Rule #5 when buying gun parts from ANY source (or when buying ANYTHING, for that matter).  Some of this knowledge can be acquired through other knowledgeable folks, and other knowledge must be acquired through experience.

Catch: I can't tell you which is which on a case-by-case basis.

Happy Shopping!

It is funny you should mention Del-Ton. They are a relatively young company with very nice gear trying to make a name for themselves in the AR-15 Market.

Del-Ton is quickly becoming a favorite company among the gun stores in my area. They have lower receiver build kits in stock!  I'm going to take a WAG and say that they are RRA kits for $55. I've used a RRA kit, and they're just fine, but mine had some light rusting on it. I scrubbed down the kit and it looks good in the rifle.

This is NOT where Del-Ton shines.   HOLY MOLY! you can buy a complete 16" carbine kit for $485!
All that is needed beyond the kit is a lower receiver.   ..you also need tools and the know how.. but you can find those. ;-)

AFAIK, Canadians can order the build kits, and pick up a receiver locally.  (please correct me if I'm wrong)

Kudos!  Thanks for the heads up.  I wouldn't have added these 3 suppliers to my decision matrix if you hadn't pointed me there.

What I love about my local gun store can best be summed up by this phone call placed yesterday.

Me: Hi, what kind of pistols do you carry?

Store: Are you LAPD or Sheriff?

Me: What? No, I just want to buy a pistol.

Store: We only sell to law enforcement.

Me: That seems kind of discriminatory...

Store: Its city law. <click>

Yes, I do. That place is about a thirty minute drive from my house. I think I might rather drive the 4 hrs to Vegas to get one at a gun show without the 52 page book of forms that have to be filled out in CA. Oh, wait, that is a nice MP5 they have on consignment...

One would think that a law that wont sell people guns would violate the 2nd amendment. One would also think that this should have been challenged in court by now, but alas, Ive never heard of that case if it does exist.

Yeah, it really sucks when people make you feel like a criminal just for asking about something that used to be in every part of LA only a few years ago. I can name 5 stores within walking distance that are no longer there.

I have been doing a little bit of window shopping at the last few remaining stores in CA and the choices REALLY suck. Most of it is wwII or earlier. What a crock.
