In a different post I brought on the question of how to maintain patent rights (the right to make money  Grin) when designing or inventing something, while keeping with the Open Source spirit.

I guess many people have been doing it for a while, I just had no clue about it...I think its great!!

if I ever come up with something cool and unique, I would want anyone and everyone to build it and use it...as long as no one makes money of it.  Just release the schematics or blue prints onto Server and let anyone with a screwdriver download them and have at it, but I would still like to keep certain rights in order to prevent some big company from using it and making money from my idea.

Anyway, just think its an excellent concept, needs tuning but the foundation is there and the more the need comes up, the further that this it will evolve.

Any thoughts?

I notice they didn't say a thing about "open source firearms".

Did you know that pretty much any firearm the US Military issues becomes "open source"?

That means you can machine an AR-15 to a direct blueprint spec and build it, AND SELL IT without worry of patent infringement (there are other federal regulations you'd have to abide by, but patents aren't part of them).

Same with a Beretta 92.

Or the Colt .45.

Or the SigSauer P-228

That's why you can buy the frames/receivers and build 'em any way you like.  Try buying a bare Ruger Mini-14 receiver and building a rifle with it...

...yeah, good luck with that.

You can google Open Source Firearms.  I recommend everyone build at least one of their choosing, just so they have an idea of how stuff works.

Had no clue about that... For some reason I would think the military had a strict "its our design" view on that, very cool thought.  I'll look into that, its always good to know how stuff works.

I would love to learn how to machine a tool like that. I used to work CNC machining but I never tried to put together anything automatic before. It would be interesting...

How about some horrible combination of the two?

I totally need to get myself a cnc and a lathe
