Ranger Cookies: packet of powdered creamer, coffee, and sugar - open powdered creamer add powdered coffee and sugar, roll edge closed, put in fire.  (creamer was foil linedwith a paper covereing) once paper was burned off you had a 'coffee cookie'.
Gunshot wound - carry an insertable tampon in plastic wrapper.  The tampon absorbs a remarkable amount of blood, is sterile, and the wrapper is a grat cover, then wrap rolled gauze or field dressing (plastic is also great for sucking chest wounds.

Just acouple of things from the 'past'

Never thought about using tampons for gunshot wounds.  Makes sense though.  I always thought that maxi pads/ feminine napkins/ whatever the hell they're called could serve well as field dressings to a certain extent as well.

I think that's what most of those products were initially designed to do.

I use "overnight" pads as my bloodstoppers in my field kit, because they pack smaller than bulk dressings, and absorb almost as much per, much better weight/bulk absorbency ratio.  They're more expensive than bulk dressings, however, so they're not as cost-effective in an emergency service setting;  But for me, only using them once in a blue moon, and only buying one package to last me until they expire, it works.

Tampons are good for GSW's, but they're not quite as versatile as the maxis, so I passed on them.

Those ranger cookies don't sound 1/2 bad. I think I'll try making them in the firepit in the back yard.  As for the maxi pads, that's an excellent idea for a bandage. ...do you guys keep a length of ACE bandage or something to wrap around it to apply pressure?

edit: (since you're all EMTs now) what is the best clotting agent to keep in the med kit?

Gauze pads and duct tape  Cheesy

Of the hemostats, i've never used any (and hope I never have to) but strictly from what I've read on the internet, Celox looks like the most promising. Just remember, Hemostats are only for the most uncontrollable bleeds (femoral arteries, etc)

Yup.  Don't go all hog wild on the artificial coagulants...some of them can be a real pain for an ER doc who isn't familiar with them or their action.

A doc who's been in the Sandbox will recognize how to deal with it.  But an ER doc who's never been outside of a clinical setting in his own home town might not, and that could exacerbate the patient's condition and lead to a less-than-stellar outcome, if you know what I mean.

And really, if you're an untrained person, (like someone who doesn't like the sight of blood) and you're in a situation where it's you, and a hemostat away from someone's death, shit has not only hit the fan, but it's clogged it up so badly the fan can't even spin.

Gauze, and Duct tape, best non-med-trained way to do it. Apply massive pressure, tape it down hard, and haul ass to a medical facility.

For food you can eat miners lettuce

Which grows all over the place where I'm at. Its supposed to be really good but I have yet to try it.

You can also eat acorns which I have a ton of! They are bitter but you prepare them much like you would olives. If you boil them several times you can remove the tannins or if you use alcohol or vinegar you can soak them for 3-6 months changing the fluid once per month. The Indians in my area used to eat a lot of them. The white oaks produce MUCH larger acorns than the red oaks but both are edible. I have a nice video of the process and I will be putting it on my site as soon as I edit it.

I like those tips from the old days.

I use sterile cling gauze..easier on the body than an ACE bandage, which should be used for bracing joints temporarily or for splinting.

And best clotting agent?  I second datamaggot:  Gauze pads and tape.  Duct tape if you must, regular med tape if you have that option.  Having both 1" and 2" med tape, and possibly even paper tape for those with allergic skin, is a good thing to have in your medkit.  Tape can be used as emergency suturing, even (though it is a last resort).

Single sided adhesive bonding strip is one of the most useful things of which an Emergency Medical Technician should have in abundance.

QUIK CLOT.....that shit is gold!...but you have to watch out for the 1st gen stuff, a side effect is a thermal reaction...aka...it clots your wound but you have to deal with a burn injury on top of the other trauma

Kerlix...gauze pads and duct tape are still the best thing you can have....if it aint broke, dont fix it!
