Has anyone ever thought about setting up some type of bot to sit in the IRC and some type of nifty scripted object to chill out somewhere in Hunker Downs to act as a bridge between the communities?

I know the IRC has a declining member-base, but even still, it'd give some of us a way to communicate when we should be at our jobs working... Wink

**Preparing for flaming ahead of time**

I think SecondLife is boring, slow, and bloated to an extreme. It is basically a glorified messenger.

It was cool when I started using it and for a few weeks after, but it's just too bloated, slow and boring to really use for any extended time.

That aside, IRC is in my opinion a great way to communicate. If someone was to do as mephyt described, it might be set up something like this...

In the IRC room, there would sit a IRC bot that on the same pc runs SecondLife. That bot would have maybe a computer in SecondLife that people can sit at and type to the IRC room in real life. It would then relay the messages.

For a more high bandwidth situation and for someone with more programming knowledge, it would do the above, except also allow for media streaming. In other words someone would be able to connect to the bot server, listen to whats being said in SecondLife and then be able to talk in SecondLife from this setup.

Second Life is hardly for everyone. At first I was really into it, but of late I've been easing back and focusing on First Life. Not that I don't drop in now and again, just not as much as I used to.

Unless you have a fairly fast connection and computer, as well as some patience, it isn't going to be your cup of tea.

In the IRC room, there would sit a IRC bot that on the same pc runs SecondLife. That bot would have maybe a computer in SecondLife that people can sit at and type to the IRC room in real life. It would then relay the messages.

Actually, you would be using the opensource SL library on that PC with a script that would act to connect and relay messages to an eggdrop bot in the IRC. The library connects using a valid account so as to not have to support the GUI for SL at the same time. The IRC bot would then send messages back and forth between itself and SL, thereby requiring only 2 bots. Effectively, you could drop the IRC relay on the SL end, anywhere you'd want to, although a centralized meeting area in SL would be most appropriate. The bots would handle proper translation of nicks and messages on both ends so that you could communicate in an effective manner.

Some dude named slickfox own an IRC server and also has the script to bridge the two worlds. Kind of an integrated solution, but utilizing proper configuration and an extra relay, we could have everything moving pretty smoothly between SL and whatever IRC server we choose in the end to use. Additionally, one (possibly myself) could set up a java-based IRC client that could sit on a website so that those stuck at jobs (possibly myself) could continue to communicate during the daytime.

Just a few thoughts...

Very cool idea. I'd definitely like something I could access via IRC as I've had numerous lag problems with SL.

Well, here are a few suggestions...

For an online IRC client, my friend has used this one setup quite well and people seem to like it. I could compress it and send it to someone to host somewhere as soon as my friend gets his FTP server working again (router fudged up and hes gotta work two 14 hour days).

URL to view how client works:
http://teraalpha.com/STA/modules/ircmod/

Client can be modded (view this to see an alternate setup):
Go to the link below and look on the left side under the menu for "--Event Chat--" and click the button:
http://teraalpha.com/STA/modules/content/?id=1

As for server, If you don't use the Rant Media server, could always try starchat.net ... they have a great server and do allow bots (as long as they are not destructive and don't fuck up the server). The admins are friendly and vigilant.

I'd be willing to "give" someone a subdomain if they wanted to host it...

Wow, I can't figure Second Life out at all. It's probably the least intuitive--well, anything--I've ever used. I'd really love to jump in to Hunker Downs and hang out, but the barrier to entry right now is kind of steep.

Yeah, there's a slight learning curve, but once you start figuring it out, it all comes in pretty quickly. Good times, you should try a bit more!

I pretty much agree. Though I do love the ability to talk to other Wogs, with actual voices, in real-time, it's sort of a hassle to use. And after a while, the novelty sort of wore off, and I haven't been on in a while. Everyone was real friendly, just the idea of my computer freezing up because some crazy ass animation decides to screw with it, is sort of a turn off.

And that's just with the quality down low.

Sadly SL is still not great for communicating with a large group of people. Whether in voice or merely typing, if there are more then 20 or so of you (even in an otherwise deserted sim), you are awaiting the inevitable freeze/crash.
However, if you are the sort who enjoys a bit of solitary exploring/building, it can be quite graceful. No, really!
The best times I have there are problem solving with a small group of mates. While I am sure the novelty will wear off eventually, at the moment there are still things I want to learn to create. It has it's limitations for sure, but as utter-wastes-of-time-when-you-should-be-working go, I still enjoy it :-)

Funny.  You ever been to one of Sean's SL broadcasts?

We've got pictures.

I'm the one sitting on the funny yellow toilet.
