Speaking of, I noticed you don't have any knives up at PrepHQ.  You planning on selling home-made knives?

It would be cool if you sold blanks or something, like Atlanta Cutlery does for Wogs to make their own knives, or at least customize their own kit-knives.  Just a thought...

I personally would speak well of MAXAM knives.  I have two, like I said, which I have had for years.  The big hunter seen above was a gift that I thought was kinda cheesy.  (It does look kinda cheap I'll admit.)  I started using this knife whenever I didn't want to damage my good knife or if I was going where I thought I might loose it.  Before I knew it, I was using this knife exclusively.  Five years of abusing it like the cheap, ugly knife it is, and it is still in pretty good shape.  None of that slightly bent point nonsense you expect from cheaper knives.

That being said, the multi-tool isn't the best.  While it is very useful, the blades seem weak and don't keep an edge worth a damn.  The thing cost me all of $5 at a traveling knife booth though, so I guess it doesn't matter really.  Still gets plenty of action as my daily carry knife.

I haven't had time to add in the knives yet, there are just so damned many. I won't be listing handmade knives (Well I am hoping to become a dealer for Emerson, Strider & Chris Reeve, and those are handmade). To date I have made 1 knife completely. That was enough. I have done all of the steps for various others (IE Forging, Grinding, Heat Treating, Handling, Etc. etc.) But from start to finish I made 1 knife. First I forged a billet of damascus, then I forged it into a Squirrel Tail Skinner, then I ground it and heat treated it, etched it so you could see the pattern. Then I donated it to the Blacksmith Guild I was in for their Annual Christmas auction, then I bought it back, LOL.

As far as blanks go, I doubt I would get into that. There are a lot of good reputible companies out there that sell kits and blanks, etc. I'd be happy to recommend some if anyone is interested.

As far as Maxam goes, I just haven't heard of them and there ain't much in modern cutlery that I haven't heard of (at least company wise). So it leads me to believe it's either a Chi-com or a India/Pakistani company. From their website it also appears that they are just ripping off other companies designs.

But to each their own. I will say that you don't have to spend hundreds of dollars for a good knife. There are many on the market for less than $100 that will work and hold up to the test of time. But I'd bet money those are not one of them. No offense.

No offense taken brother.  Cool

Yeah, if you could reccomend some good companies selling kits and blanks, that would be appreciated.  Atlanta Cutlery is the only one I know of, and I haven't heard good things about their "Windlass Steelcraft" blades.

I did build a custom Katana once from a Damascus blade I purchased from them.  It was for someone else so I can't testify to its integrity, but it sure was beautiful.

If you could recommend a place I could get a flex-steel sword blade or blank for under a hundred I would have your kids. Is that going too far? But seriously, that stuff costs a lot.

What is wrong with going the method of converting a file into a blade as opposed to the buying a blank way?

Here are three good companies:

http://www.texasknife.com/vcom/index.php
http://www.jantzsupply.com/

The Windlass blades are OK. They are not good or great by any means. They are forged in India and the steel they use is not the best. I have a sword with a windlass blade and I like it but it is nothing compared ot the others I own.

Hey... I said you could get a good knife for under a hundred... Nothing about swords. A good sword is expensive. I currently have several:

1) Cheap-O Katana
2) CAS Iberria Katana in walking stick
3) CAS Iberria Scottish Court Sword (18th century smallsword)
4) REAL EL CHEAP-O Toledo Sword.
5) Custom smallsword made from antique blade.
6) Custom 18th century hanger made from Windlass blade
7) Totally handmade 18th century hanger, made by one of the guys who made stuff for the Pirates of the Carribbean films.
Cool Wakizashi length custom tactical sword made from an ATS-34 Bob Engnath blade blank.

The 18th century hanger cost me over $1000 with the scabbard. It was well worth it as it is absolutely gorgeous.

The modern waki is very tacti-cool. I purchased it for $300 back in the summer of 1995. I bought the sword with my very first paycheck from my very first job and the sheath I got with the next one. This sword was far, far ahead of it's time. Now tactical Japanese styled swords in en vogue.

I have a bamboo shirasaya walking stick as well. Its a cheapo but its honed to razor sharp... unfortunately if I use it once it will be pretty much done. I carry it in my car because I have already been through the Watts riots once. My work is on the other side of it so I have to drive through Watts to get there. During the riots they were pulling white boys (or light skinned people like me) out of cars and giving them the business. Its good to have when you do run out of slugs which is very likely in that scenario.

Its strange how those "laws" that disarm us don't seem to help me, or my coworker who was pulled out of his car and beaten, feel any safer, especially when all those guys rioting had shotguns... hmm, I wonder why that is. Grrr.

Not nescessarily. I know a lot of knifemakers that don't have that many knives.

Now thats what you can call a real WOG knife.

What does it do: Cuts shit, chops shit and can even be used as a weapon.

How well does it do it: Effectiently and Effectivley

Actually I used it for gardening. Just to play/test. We went through trees pretty quickly. The edge is retained nicely and the grip works well under heavy use. No blisters, or slipping. I would actually take this knife over any of my leatherman knives when going into the bush. No question. In a fight it will comfortably cut to the bone on pretty much all limbs. Dont know it it would take off an arm in one swipe, since its not heavy enough. But that's also a plus. I can use it for a while before I get fatigued. This makes it carry-able on long walks/treks and its not going to die. The sheath is also very secure and well made. I am getting another one in the next few weeks. Depending on whether our currency has died based on the recent economic blah.
