The LHC's finally been turned on.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/7604293.stm

As far as I gather, there are four things that could occur:

1.) We find out a ton about physics, this Higgs Bosun, the Big Bang, etc that will give us a greater understanding of the Universe and could lead to FTL travel (Awesome).
2.) The world is wracked by the forces unleashed, turning the world into the PAW (Still pretty cool)
3.) The world ends in some spectacular fashion (Explosion, black hole, world turns to cheese) (Alright.)
4.) Nothing (Boring.)

What do you lads think is going to happen?

Just remember, headcrabs are vulnerable to shotguns and well timed crowbar swings.

In all seriousness, I doubt anything bad will happen. We should learn quite a bit about physics which will hopefully lead towards decent space travel.

Cosmic rays have been smashing into the earths atmosphere for years with more energy than the LHC, so there is next to no chance that anything bad will happen in the collider. I'm hoping for the Higgs Boson, because that would be experimental evidence that we are on the right track with our current physics models.
Hopefully we don't get a Resonance Cascade, I better start practicing my crowbar fighting skills.

Yeah, I'm hoping for the confirmation of Higgs-Boson from this too. Should be interesting but still many years before we get any decent news from the LHC. It is not going to end the world though one professor is trying to get it shut off because he feels it poses a threat to our human right to live as there is a chance (in his opinion) of a black hole opening up and swallowing the world.

Oh, whatever happens, it's for the best. Look at it positively, we could either

a) Get real space travel
b) get to use our AWOL bags and kukris
c) eh, not like it'll matter, we'll be compressed into dark matter or something
d) nothing. No big deal, everyone carry on, nothing to see here.

Better stock up on crow bars and energy packs!

Also, does anyone know where I can buy a HEV Mk IV, or preferably a Mk V?

It did cost about 5 or 6 billion pounds I think... (roughly 10 billion dollars) so I hope something happens.

Anyone know who paid for it?

There was a group of scientists last month trying to postpone it's operation based on the probability of the destruction of the Earth....
looks like they lost.
Let's hope we don't.
I keep trying to imagine what things might look/feel like in the maybe 1 second or so before event horizon in the black hole scenario....
all in all, not such a bad way to go if you had to.... probably?

Working on it, working on it..

No one would survive long enough to see the event horizon. If you somehow weren't killed by the earth scrunching itself up like a ball of paper, you'd be torn apart by gravitational forces well before you got near the event horizon.
As the gravitation gradient increases, the parts of your body closer to the singularity will be accelerating toward it a lot faster than the parts of you further away from it.

(Though as the black hole wouldn't stop at the earths core, but start to orbit the centre of our gravity well in decreasing circles, the attraction forces would not be evenly distributed and constantly moving. You might well get thrown out into space instead. Not a bad option, as the black hole would have the same net gravitational feild as the earth, just compressed. If it locates itself properly, the moon could continue to orbit it for some time.)

Yeah, that would be classic... we're so smart that we blew up the world.

There is a good possibility that nothing will happen but on the lesser end of the scale they may just blow themselves up and nothing else. If I understand it right, and I like to think I do, they may just create a black hole or wormhole which will speed up our computers quite a bit... or suck us in to oblivion.

I would actually like to see them stumble upon a white hole.
