Here is another project in the works- attempting to expand our winter crops this year (lettuce, spinach, greens, etc.) into late JANUARY, if possible utilizing a geodesic greenhouse constructed of reclaimed materials. UV plastic goes up tomorrow... more pics to follow.

That is cool man.  THat is one of my projects for late summer, early fall this year.  What kind of UV plastic you gonna go with?  I was researching at the big box hardware store and found some that says it lets the correct light through for plants.  I was hoping to build something that I can keep some tomatos, peppers, and some other things alive through the winter, not so much for harvesting through the winter, but so they are ready to go in early spring.  I like your geodesic design, very cool.

We rsearched it alot- and the olny sheeit worth getting for us was some good 6 mm UV greenhouse plastic (eek $$$$) -(supposed to hold up 4 years... but maybe the folks that rated it don't live in central Maine...? We'll see.)
Just finished getting it on, more pics tomorrow.

Hey man, that is awesome. Good work there. Are you going to elevate the base soil to keep it warmer?
Sort of- going to use raised beds and try internal cold frames when it starts gettin real cold. Ugh- don't even want to think about that after the friggin winter we just had.

The stuff I was looking at was like a corragated roofing material, not sure the thickness.  A 4'x8' sheet ran for about $18.  I have an existing shed I built last summer.  The long side of the shed faces north / south.  So off the south side, I was going to frame up maybe a 5-6' by 12' long structure and throw some of those panels on.  I know it wouldn't be the best structure, but within my budget, skills, and gotta be better than nothing.

Its nice to see how simple geometric shapes can be used to create a strong frame. I have always liked this design. North face make a tent that looks almost the same. Very appealing indeed. Hive like. Good work by the way.

[Updated the pics on pg.1]
Thanks for all of your interest.
It was 110 degrees in there this morning... when it was about 70 outside.... good thing I gave it a window on the backside for cross-ventilation...
We're going to attempt peppers, okra, cukes and tons of tomatoes this summer, can as much as possible, then convert to winter crops for the late fall to Jan.

Cool, yeah I got my seeds going too.  I have them indoors under a fluorescent ballast with 2 grow bulbs I got from the hardware store.  A bunch of my tomatos have come up and are looking good, but havent seen any of my peppers yet.  I need to look at the rest of my seeds and see what else I need to get started already.  Should be ready to transplant outside in about a month, hopefully by then the weather will be warm enough outside.

@hatter

If you're looking for another good video segment I think filming your home gardening and/or beer brewing stuff that would be really great stuff to circulate.

We used some starters in the sustainusphere for the peppers and hot-lovin plants.
We just don't seem to have the sandy-ish soil for spuds, or we'd be growin them, carrots too.

for more brewing videos, check out:

but yah- maybe we should document more gardening in video format.

Crops goin in... so far still on schedule with the Maine planting season.
(updated on pg.1 also)

AleMaker, how is the weather doing in your part of the woods?  I have been thinking about planting, but the weather here in Washington state is so finicky, I'm not sure I want to sow my seeds yet.  I've been getting cold and raining one day, then warm and sunny the next, and the cycle goes on.  Most of my seed packets suggest late May, early June, so I'm thinking in the next week or two, but curious as to your weather patterns and when you decide to plant.  Thanks.

Yah, Maine is pretty much the same... and with weather patterns dramatically changing globally as they are, it's sometimes hard to anticipate, but all in all, peas and onions, carrotts can go in when there is still thew threat of light frost... the rest getting started in the sustainusphere... but late May is pretty much the same recommended time out here, so sayeth the old greenhouse geezers.

Funny, one constant that we have found in this process: The more technical we get about anything(i.e. soil ammendments, ph, etc)... when we ask an old greenhouse geezer, they always say very little and smile, alluding to the fact that all the technical shit really doesn't matter so much in the end.

Its the same with brewing... I am almost an old fermentation geezer who has done it every way that it can be done, and I'll be damned if now, 18 years later I skip 75% of all the technical shit I used to believe simply MUST be done, and I brew better beer than ever before.
Its nature. It works.
(at least until Monsanto kills the whole system... next month...? Next year?)

Nice items. I was tossing around the idea of a sand box for my kid but it would need a cover to keep the kats and dags out. I don't want a large removable lid and I don't want one that lifts up so that leaves me with the need for a roll up or retractable one. As soon as I figure out how to do that without clogging it up with sand I will post it.
