A client is providing me with a .vob file.
I need to extract a segment out of it and save that segment in a format that I can drop into a PowerPoint presentation.
If anyone can assist me with that, please post here or send a PM or e-mail.

I really wasn't looking for a sarcastic answer. Yes, I have done the internet search on the video format. However, I don't have the experience or the software to extract the sequence. There is a deadline on this project.
Although I wasn't going to go into details here, real assistance will be compensated. I'm looking for someone who understands this video format and can extract the segment I need.

Seriously... Virtualdub does *exactly* what you're looking to do. I used to use it for all my Rant videos for converting. As an alternative, try Avidemux... much better options for conversion and it's what I use now. Avidemux: http://avidemux.org/ |

So, I found your fix for you on my first Google search. Knowing that vdub was the right software and telling you is free.... Also, those are actually my rates as a consultant. I was quite serious that I would do it for you, but the wink was because I thought that you would probably find it more cost effective to just do it yourself, and because I was violating the cardinal rule of offering services on this forum, despite knowing better. Sarcasm was not part of it. |

Enki, I owe you an apology. I'm really frustrated with this project, and being faced with a link without an explanation just set me off. I'm an excellent internet researcher and found that there were conversion and editing programs available, but I also have a tight deadline for this project and was hoping that someone out there had the ability to help. What I was looking for wasn't a "you have to learn a new software" but rather "I have the software, and I can help with that" kind of response. I've done so many quick projects for people - usually for nothing or just gratitude - and it's disappointing when I ask for help and get told to do it myself.
Glorious Mercury retrograde. Gets communication all screwed up. Thank you for the suggestions of software. I'll see if I can get this video segment extracted on my own.
Cimmerain, thanks for seeing past my frustration and offering your suggestions as well. I appreciate the courtesy.

No problem. I think that you will find that the instructions on that page are pretty easy to follow, and if you output a wmv9 video, or even mpeg1/2 you will be able to play it back without trouble on any reasonably recent powerpoint capable machine. |

After some learning-curve issues with Virtualdub (Avidemux was going to take 17 hours to open the video file), I figured out how to set start and end markers and save out each segment. The first time I did it without compression and somewhere along the way it got corrupted, but the next time I got it extracted and compressed successfully. The other segment I compressed with Movie Maker.
Doing it myself added another two hours onto the project that I can't bill the client for, but in the end, I learned some valuable skills that I can use with other clients.
