Starting a new radio show? (some thing newsreal, ppr, etc?)

After watching Unkle Dak take a break, Newsreal go down, PPR (my PERSONAL favorite!) and other things going on that is just driving me nuts there is no real privacy, technical and cyber tech show on Rantradio. So I have decided that I would like some time to work on a show of some thing in this type.

I will  have to get some a microphone, suggested recording software and may be bounce around a few online radio shows and podcasts to get some experience before I go out on my own or work with someone else to put a show together.

I would like to start a discussion on what people think.

Logam

I think it totally depends on whether you want to do a live show or pre-recorded. I did a pre-recorded show for the last 1 1/2 years and I achieved I would say above average sound quality through a simple headset I used to talk on skype with. You can find heaps of software out there for mixing your audio together and recording it. I personally used soundbooth to record and then mixed it all together in reaper (sound editing package).

I'd love to see another tech style show come onto rant radio. I love the whole idea of cyber tech, future tech advancements and even things relating to censorship online and what not. I believe there is a law currently going through the motions around the world that seeks to make ISP's responsible (legally) for everything you do online which would see a global shitstorm take place. The worst part was that countries voted it in without even considering the opinion of the people, relying on a government 'official' for each country and some consumer watch dog companies to provide a 'global' opinion on whether it would benefit the population of each country or not.

edit: as for the actual podcasting element, it gets easier every time you do it. If you listen to episode 1 of digital leftovers and then jump to episode 80, you'll see i'm leaps and bounds ahead of when I started. It all takes practice and if you need any advice on it, let me know. I'll be out of action for a week or two but i should check these forums every now and then :)

can also email me at digitalleftovers[at]hotmail[dot]com - i'll check that more frequently :p
I'm pretty sure Europe was able to vote on it, or some parts of Europe but I'm not 100% sure. I'm going off what I saw on piratebay a month ago and a quick google search. I'm sure there is plenty of information for a show out there and if you do go ahead with it, I for one will be happy to tune in! :D

I just wanted to give an update on this. I'm awaiting some some  microphone - headgear to come around Christmas time. I'm hoping after getting back into the new year that I'll be connecting with some folks and possibly chatting about some ideas I would like to do.

I am not sure if I am going to be doing a show OR maybe work with some thing established. But I do believe after multiple episodes of frustration, that I need to put emotions into some thing helpful to the rant community. To what that may be, is still being thought about.

FullMetalHarlot

I am wanting to also work on a new radio show for Rant Media.

Around Christmas and the new year--it looks like I'll finally be starting off the year with some decent equipment... rather than having had everything smashed or exploded, Honestly... starting every year off with an infinite bag of spillage gets really really annoying quickly.

I'm mostly going to do my old idea of having several cheap, but redundant microphones... until I am at least 65% certain this equipment is not going to explode. I mean--one computer appears to have gotten really close... but I think a few slight fixes might work. One involves fixing the fan, so it is going in the reverse direction. Giving a decent upgrade on ram, adding a new video card... and reconnecting the sound hardware.

Also... in my various issues and troubles, I think I have learned enough, that in 2012, I shall be working on KittyKat-Deck... a personal computer that well... my other project involves a system known as Eechi-DNA (alt name: E-Echidna, move the hyphen for fun!) that will work to fix the annoying stuff I have issues with in Linux systems. I hope I do not end up programming KDE5 when I do that (Which BTW, check your Radar for KDE5 coming out soon)... but by 2013, I can guarantee that X12 well be worked on... and well... if my computers do not explode, and I do not get any serious injuries (hypothermia fucking sucks! Also: it is not fun to have your only option to live, be entering into an obvious death trap... uh... Vancouver is surprisingly easy to live in, comparitively). Either way...

* USB battery paks. The ability to power something by USB also works as the reverse.. able to power the computer. This will be fun to mess with.

Eh... but yeah... I'd definitely be up for adding Cyberpunk and Survival Mechanisms into a radio podcast... if you need a cohost. I don't bite, if you tell me not too.
I'm cute, my opinion doesn't matter.

Interesting problems, FMH. I just dumped 5 old single core machines. I am now down to one single core 2.8gz, 2Gs of ram and no video card. I may be going to some newer machines If I can trade someone or find some thing better.  I don't think I am going to be able to afford the newest and greatest with 20G's of ram and multi-core. It just isn't going to happen!

Maybe I should start a show called Trailer Trash Retro!?!? :)

(just a simple note, FullMetalHarlot. I would contact Cimm if you think your show will be good enough for RantRadio. Not sure your subject matter. But it sound like from your comments, it could go a lot of direction. And I believe Cimmerian is always looking for homegrown talent. :)

FullMetalHarlot

Eh... I'd more be thinking I should have a cohost or something like that.

Also, whenever I have contacted Cimm, it was like he had a nice twenty foot pole he had borrowed without asking to handle my responses. "Oh... hey... you are doing the, 'I've stolen somebody else's twenty foot pole, and still not comfortable doing this'... thing... great... uh. Sure, it was charming to talk with you too... I guess?"

And... honestly... I have no bloody clue, why this stuff is considered "Trailer Trash Tech" stuff. There is no concievable reason to need more than just a couple gigs of RAM. We'd also not need anywhere near the amount of GPU and CPU power asked of people, if we'd just get people who actually knew how to program stuff to fucking program the software.

When did BogoSort, BogoFind, BogoFS, BogoNetworkTopology, BogoFirewall, XFree86 and BogoEFI become the expected algorthyms to code into programs? Computer programmers seem to no longer be getting taught anything about computer theory, beyond just entering code into a compiler and monkeying it, until it can compile.

Oh, right--and you can stop being such an asshole to me @destined. I find it the opposite of fun... what is the word? Oh, right, very grating... or maybe "vexing" is the word I am looking for.

I've chosen to ignore what could be a lot of passive agressive and patronising comments, and just take them as you not getting what has been said to you. Or misunderstanding what you are reading. Or just refusing to believe I have any clue on this stuff.
I'm cute, my opinion doesn't matter.

Wow you're pretty pissed off at everything eh?
Dest wasn't dissin' you...frankly I think he was trying to be encouraging...
I agree that you should whip out a radio show on anything and everything you think is important.
All u need is passion...and this excuse of "waiting for a mic" is total bullshit.  You can get them at the dollar store for $3.
I AM REDNECK COUNTRY TRAILER TRASH and even I think both of you have complete shit for hardware.
@Dest - quad core with 8gigs of ram, onboard shit video/audio will only run you a couple hundred bucks if you got a case and fan.  That's all I run for my surfing box.  Laptop is only a dual core with 4gigs ram and really shitty battery life..(45 minutes).  Ya'll running single cores with no-ap linux boxes confuse me.  I can see having this as a toy on the side...but not as a primary machine.
I took both pills just to see what would happen and chased it with a 5'th of Magellan Tears.  HUZZAH!

FullMetalHarlot

Yeah... I know I can get them at a Dollar Store for a Dollar. I just am not going to do any shop lifting any time soon =P

And it is hard to not be angry when you are alone. And all trying to not be alone does, is just cement how alone I will be.

Thus, anger comes out.

You are a huge idiot, aren't you?

I still have no idea what you'd possibly be doing with all that CPU and RAM. What you could possibly be doing with all that power.

Nobody ever gives me a sufficent answer to "what the hell do you actually do with that power"?

And power is just another one of those things--it is pointless if you never use it.

-sigh- That analogy just does not work.

Now if you said, "same reason you'd buy a Porsche instead of a Volkswagon"--it might make sense... but here, it clearly does not fit the situation.

FullMetalHarlot - Me being an asshole? Maybe you should read my messages a little more with tongue-in-cheek? And maybe you haven't been around the forums very long (less than 2 years that I remember?) I may grating to some and that is their choice to read into what I say.

For all in tense and purpose, my comment about "Trailer Trash Retro" is about reusing technology to the upteenth degree of day, time and space. Every single dual core I have owned has gotten damaged, because I am very HARD on my systems. And almost all of my single core stuff is still functioning until a year ago when I moved. All of those PC's were an average of 10 years old and 1GB max of ram. (With the exception of the one remaining PC I own now with 2gb of ram.)

So you might say, I had about 10 PC's with this level of ram for nearly that long and made them work due to financial straits I was in. Most of those PC's left my steadfastness about four days ago because I could no longer TAKE tripping over junk that won't boot or is still usable.

I currently have a place full of retro junk from Commodore 64 -> my single PC. And most average 10 to 30 years on them. So now that you might know a minor history of my comment, you understand it better.

And my final comment. I grew up programming in constrained ram environments. Today, that is not the case, when people can simple farm off work to a simple and cheap, Amazon storage system or other cloud providers. So you are simply not constrained by system limits of ram and storage anymore.

Why do you think a lot of the IPAD's and other low end graphics systems, tablets are doing so well? Maybe, because a lot of the processing is not really done on Desktops or similarly large systems with hordes of hard drive and ram space? A lot of people that are experienced users are now moving all of that data off their desktops and into their cell phone, PDA or other lower powered systems and let some huge, Cloud system do all of their heavy lifting computations.

Think about Facebook, G+, Youtube, Microsoft 360, Google Docs? Some of those examples are nearly 5+ years old? I know there are some diehard media creators in here that go for the Bigger systems to do their own encoding of their audio/visual stuff. But that is growing by the day from the people I talk to that work in these industries to happen less and less.

So I'll just let go of your angry post. Come in and lets talk.

MindGrinder - Yes, I have seen those cheap systems. I had a long talk about a year ago (and had continued in IRC for months) with Yugosaki about some great systems I could get cheap that had bundles of ram and hard drive space. I know a number of my friends that are programming at a higher level than I am are using a minimum of 8 to 20GB of ram on their systems along with the huge Flash based solid state drives and NAS drive backups on gigabit ethernet.

Financially, I can't afford that level of dedicated hardware. I'm looking to pick up some thing decent that will do the jobs I need. And per our past discussion, I really do want to do a show. Hoping soon that might be possible.

Yeah... did you see all the parts about me wanting a conversation... and not somebody lecturing.

Feeling like I am being considered either an equal, or a potential equal. You know.. the stuff that if you'd read, you'd know I am reading your posts and getting rather frustrated?

For all in tense and purpose, my comment about "Trailer Trash Retro" is about reusing technology to the upteenth degree of day, time and space.

Sorry--I misinterpreted that. I was not entirely familiar with the term, and I guess the timing may have been off for me to take it in any way, but an insulting way.

Especially when my handle of "harlot" comes from how nobody believes I do not sell my ass on the street... no matter how much I try to tell them I do not--and how I really am never actually selling my ass on the street.

The other handle, that I started using "The Lamia" and "The Harlot" as oppose to... was a reference to Jerry Springer. Particularly the phrase, "you think you are all that". I stopped using that handle, "DakeDesu" (or simply "Dake") because people kept ragging on me about being part of Anonymous. I consider Anonymous the biggest load of fuckwad idiots who wouldn't be able to have an intelligent thought between the few of them. As they'd be too busy getting distracted by DDoSing websites, bot nets, lolcats, Mudkips and naked women.

So, I retired the handle "DakeDesu" for a while there.

Sorry for my freak out--but I will state, that terms' timing kind of was at the wrong moment.

Quote from: destined on December 18, 2011, 05:28:12 AMEvery single dual core I have owned has gotten damaged, because I am very HARD on my systems.

Eh, my policies have mostly been founded by stuff exploding around me. My computer equipment tends to explode. Increasing how much is power, only really increases how quickly they explode it has really seemed to work out, really.

Quote from: destined on December 18, 2011, 05:28:12 AMAnd almost all of my single core stuff is still functioning until a year ago when I moved.

Those had either all blown up, or had been given away by 2007 for my own self. Since 2008, I've had to deal with a computer exploding atleast thrice a year. Some of them are my fault for not knowing the current moment the laws of physics were not in effect. Falling up a flight of stairs is one of those moments.

... thank you. Finally somebody who is not on my ass for constantly not buying the newest and best of anything out there. For having somebody else who seems to be trying to get PCs to try to last longer by proper maintence.

-hugs-

Now then. I cannot keep up this, I am suppose to be the one rage festing. Lets rage fest in this post, okay?

Oh... in my case, well, three different outfits of clothing, and recently I have found that I should move to a stance of "if I can wear it, I can own" it style of policy the next time something like what happened happened.

Usually I can get more in a year after I've lost everything.

This year seems to be slower--but well, I've lost everything about twice this year. Might be why.

Quote from: destined on December 18, 2011, 05:28:12 AMAnd most average 10 to 30 years on them. So now that you might know a minor history of my comment, you understand it better

Because I did not have some kind of genetic knowledge, my response still seems justified at the time.

Now that I know your term, it doesn't seem as insulting.

I'd try to use something else that has the same charm... but not "Trailer Trash Retro"... I've been using "Lo Techz" myself. After the hackers from the movie Johnny Mnemonic--the ones with a hacking dolphin. As remove that dolphin--and everything they have... is pretty much the same thing here.

I prefer to try to keep my stuff limited to constrained ram and what not... as well, part of a back up plan. That is all.

Why do you think a lot of the IPAD's and other low end graphics systems, tablets are doing so well?

I will flat out state my rational:
* Facebook anywhere
* Twitter on the toilet
* Being available in different colours (make another colour for your product, and you double sales)
* Because you are worthless if you do not have a smartphone or tablet. Still using those old cell phones? Get use to being treated different from the real people.
* Er... lets list this to "stigma" and "catching up with the Joneses" as a better way to do that.
* Advertising campaigns.

Quote from: destined on December 18, 2011, 05:28:12 AMMaybe, because a lot of the processing is not really done on Desktops or similarly large systems with hordes of hard drive and ram space?

Honestly, from somebody who has programmed, I have issues figuring out what it is they are doing that requires more ram and drive space. I am guessing they use Bogo Sort and Bogo Search--and other similar style algorthyms as my main response to how they handle their space.

Quote from: destined on December 18, 2011, 05:28:12 AMA lot of people that are experienced users are now moving all of that data off their desktops and into their cell phone, PDA or other lower powered systems and let some huge, Cloud system do all of their heavy lifting computations.

Yes.. but... I still maintain, we should never handle systems like we depend on that. Making use of that power is one thing.

Depending on that power to function? Not a good idea.

The audio/visual editting and processing stuff is the only reason we need to go beyond the Spectrum ZX.

Check out Contiki OS. Just a bit of work, and you can use a C=64 to browse Facebook. And still have it be Facebook causing the slow down problems. You'd probably need a RAM upgrade... somehow Facebook as a website is capable of being a RAM hog... I... I haven't begun to puzzle for the life of me how a website managed to succeed at that.

Audio/visual stuff, has been using this distrubuting process stuff since Rainmaker Entertianment once did an animation for the Dire Straits.

So--I guess it is a case by case thing here.

Quote from: destined on December 18, 2011, 05:28:12 AMBut that is growing by the day from the people I talk to that work in these industries to happen less and less.

Well, unless you are doing graphics or audio editing... you can probably run most of what you are doing on a 286 with 640K of RAM... well... maybe not a 286, it had major issues with paging and memory problems by the circuit design.

However to write a word document, to use a desktop environemtn and surf the internet--you do not need much.

The only reason this rush in hardware was possible, was because we used it for audio and visuals.

My only issue is: we are not making certain that this extra capability is being properly used.

Look at Firefox. It is a wonderful example of how Cargo Cult Code, Here Be Dragons and people who really really did not know enough on computer science, have returned that code base back to the days it was in in NS4.

It is funny... Netscape 4 to Netscape 4, in just over a decade. Before you say you couldn't run Firefox on those computers, I'll counter Netscape 4 doesn't run on even the computers today =P

I await a response where you chide me, act like I am a vapid airhead no nothing, treat me like I know nothing, make a point of saying my opinion is based on a long idea that has nothing to do with anything I said, and act condescending to tell me to "wake up", "grow up", "try to listen", "try to learn" and all the stuff that indicates I am aggressively not knowing anything people aren't telling me.

He had a tendancy of not wanting me to meet his friends. It seemed like he was embarassed he knew me after a while. Or like he didn't want anybody to know he knew me--or that he was perhaps hiding me.

It eventually got to the point where if I asked him for anything, I usually was expecting "no" for an answer--followed by him saying I was inconvient to him... or he just didn't want it to be known he knew I exist. Usually if I did even think about approaching him, it was a situation of desperate measures.

Depends on if you were one of the people Yami couldn't succeed at hiding me from you with.

(Honestly, the rules Yami had to even talk with him were ridiculous. If somebody might possible learn he had even knew I existed to respond to him... it seemed like that was banned)

Its like he wished he never met me so many years ago. >.>'
